Prof. Franco Guzzetti was born in Milan on 1 October 1959. He graduated in Civil Transport Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1984. He is enrolled in the Order of Engineers of the Province of Milan (no. 18247) and is a reserve army officer with the rank of Lieutenant.
He earned a PhD in Geodetic and Cartographic Sciences in 1989. In 1990 he began working as a researcher in Topography and Cartography and in 2002 was appointed associate professor at the DIIAR Department of the Polytechnic University of Milan, Faculty of Civil Architecture.
In the early years his research activity focused on themes relating to architectural surveying and structural control. He later worked on cartographic production and methodologies for designing geographical databases to support Territorial Information Systems. He has recently gained considerable expertise and conducted studies on the use of LIDAR instrumentation for land surveying and management of interoperable Web GIS systems.
He has collaborated on Italian and European projects involving normalisation of the surveying phase in the creation of geographical databases. He was part of the working group 1 of the IntesaGis project for definition of topographical database specifications. He collaborates actively on projects for the Lombardia regional government and other local authorities on issues regarding the creation of topographical databases, interaction with cadastral databases, implementations of Territorial Information Systems regarding the urban greenery and underground technology networks. Through dedicated research contracts he has prepared “Technical specifications for surveying and mapping of underground networks” and “Aerophotogrammetric technical specifications for the production of topographical databases”.
